As a third-year Graphic Design student at Humber College, Megan impressed us with her flair for editorial design – a passion she discovered in her childhood, cutting and pasting elements from newsstand publications to create her own magazine.

Razor Creative Solutions would like you to meet our newest intern, Ally Renkema (@allyrenkema_designs). Ally joins us from Durham College, where she’s in her final year of Graphic Design. She grew up with a love of drawing that crossed over to the digital realm when she discovered Photoshop in a high school media arts course. When she asked her teacher if there were any careers that called for Photoshop expertise, he told her about graphic design. And the rest is history. 🚀✨

Advertising and marketing, as well as packaging design, are Ally’s current passions. When she’s not in school or being mercilessly overworked at Razor (Kidding! We don’t do that to our interns), Ally stays busy knitting frog hats. 🐸🧶

“Yes, frog hats! I’ve made around 80 and kept about 60 of them,” she says.

Who wants to see Ally’s frog hats in one of our future posts? Give us a 👍 and we’ll see if she’ll share her favourites.

When it comes to artificial intelligence (AI) in the design world, due diligence is definitely in order. 🤖

Yes, AI can generate images and video, including “deep fakes” that are helping to fuel online disinformation. But it can also be used as a foundational tool to streamline content creation and open new creative avenues for designers.

AI has already found its way into many of the applications designers use every day, including Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Express. Does this mean anyone using AI can now be a designer? No – unless you think being an ace in F1 23 makes you the next Max Verstappen. 🏎️💨

AI is changing design, to be sure. And Razor Creative Solutions is exploring the best ways to harness it to improve the way we tell our clients’ visual stories.

Team Razor is taking a lunch break after a busy morning at DesignThinkers.

The highlight for us was the session on branding and exhibit design presented by Lauren Scully and Brian Studak of Plaid. But we’re a little sad we missed the sold-out LEGO Letterpress workshop. (Conceptualizing, assembling and printing your own art with a LEGO letterpress – Gutenberg would be so jealous!)

This afternoon, we’re looking forward to sessions exploring the future of design, including the impact of AI and a look at how NASA designs for tomorrow.

We’ll be back with our final notes from DesignThinkers a little later today.

Did we say there were two keynotes this morning? We should have, because Eleni Beveratou’s wowed us with her look at the latest directions in type, including its use in VR, AR and mixed reality environments. Team Razor was dialed in because type is central to our design aesthetic.

Okay, we know that sounds kind of design-nerdy, but that’s why we’re here – to load up on the latest insights and ideas and then find ways to use them to create more powerful visual stories for our clients.

Well, Team Razor made it through Day 1 of DesignThinkers in Toronto and our heads were spun! We got great insights from @theChrisDo, @ten_ten, @Dasadavka, @ptrani, @fernandezrenato and @paulascher_arch. And we picked up a whole bunch of new design, process and business ideas that we can’t wait to try out in the studio.

Tonight, we’re going to get some rest because Day 2 will be jam-packed with 19 – count ‘em, 19! – more design-centred presentations and workshops. And we’ll be sharing our experiences with you all day.
