“Thank you for an amazing job especially in such a short turn around time. The client was very happy with the result:

The fundamental principles of design are transfera The fundamental principles of design are transferable, meaning that the basics you learn in graphic design are largely applicable to other creative fields.

So, when high school art students apply to Razor Creative Solutions for a co-op placement, they don’t have to be future graphic designers as long as they’re interested in some aspect of design. Take Skylar Williams @skwlls_ for example.

Skylar is a Grade 12 student at Saint Edmund Campion Catholic Secondary School in Brampton who’s leaning toward a career in interior design – a fascination fueled by the wave of TV shows devoted to the subject.

Skylar just finished up a placement that saw Razor Founder and Creative Director Roberto Carreiro work with her to explore design principles that apply to both graphic and interior design. In addition, he helped her develop a personal brand package she can use as part of a portfolio presentation to the college and university design programs she’s applying to.

To be clear, it wasn’t all work for Skylar while she was at Razor. Her love of softball and Roberto’s lifelong devotion to baseball dovetailed quite nicely, even if it was a little too early to be talking about spring training.

Thank you for joining us at Razor, Skylar! Good luck with your college and university applications.

PS – We just want to remind you there’s still time to switch from interior design to graphic design. Hint, hint! 😉

Mentorship “All I needed was a chance.” Milen Mentorship
“All I needed was a chance.”

Milena Kostyukov @designmilena had learned to rein-in her hopes each time she checked her inbox. Occasionally there was an email that began with “Thank you for your interest” and ended with “We are not accepting co-op students at this time.” Mostly there were no replies at all.

But then she clicked on one from Roberto Carreiro at Razor Creative Solutions, someone her high school art teacher suggested she reach out to. Not only was he offering a co-op placement, but he wanted to show her the day-to-day business of design. It was the launching point for her graphic design career.

When the placement ended, Milena and Roberto stayed in touch: he helped her assemble a portfolio for her university interviews. And when she was accepted into a joint York University/Sheridan College program, he invited her back to Razor for an internship that had her attending client meetings, helping manage social media campaigns, working on print projects and discovering design beyond the classroom.

Today, Milena is a successful freelance designer specializing in motion graphics. And the connection with Roberto continues, sharing conversations about design and sometimes working together on projects.

And it all started with an email.

BEFORE WE END THIS SERIES, HAPPY BIRTHDAY MILENA! 🎂

Mentorship “All I needed was a chance.” This Mentorship
“All I needed was a chance.”

This story begins in the 1990s when Sandra Matos, a high school co-op student, arrived at a small marketing communications company, uncertain about her future but excited for a chance to discover what graphic design was all about. Her mentor, Roberto Carreiro, an illustrator and designer, was fresh out Sheridan College.

At the time they didn’t know it, but the mentor and mentee were about to learn lessons from their time together that continue to shape their careers to this day.

For Sandra, the chance to learn from someone with the patience to walk her through design concepts and processes was unforgettable. For Roberto, the time spent with Sandra opened his eyes to the importance and impact of sharing the lessons he learned from others.

Nearly 30 years later, the two are still in touch. Sandra is an accomplished graphic designer taking the bold step of launching her own design firm, following a similar path to Roberto, who launched Razor Creative Solutions 26 years ago. And Roberto has taken the experience that began with Sandra and turned it into a personal commitment that has made mentoring a cornerstone of his company’s culture.

“All I needed was a chance.”

New country. New school. New culture.
For Zeal Mehta, a design student at George Brown College in Toronto, her first year in Canada was dizzying. And then Covid hit: Suddenly, everything went remote – including her classes and a new internship at Razor Creative Solutions. She wasn’t sure what to expect.

But amidst the chaos, Zeal’s days with Razor were a welcome bit of stability. She quickly settled into the studio’s rhythm, even though all the interactions had to be online via Google Chat and Google Meet. Roberto Carreiro and the Razor team introduced her to concepts like design management and had her work with new design tools on actual client projects. The best part came when a client chose Zeal’s design concept for one of their largest public events.

A few months after her internship, with her George Brown diploma in hand and her experience at Razor fresh on her resume, Zeal landed a full-time job as a UI/UX designer with one of the world’s largest video game publishers.
All she needed was a chance and she ran with it!

“All I needed was a chance.”

Sometimes a chance comes out of nowhere, like when your hair stylist tells you about a design studio, Razor Creative Solutions, offering co-op placements for high school students like you.

That’s how it began for Bailey Sullivan @bailey__design. She arrived at Razor unsure of her career path: Would it be sports physiotherapy or graphic design? Razor’s creative director and founder, Roberto Carreiro, leveraged her interests by involving her in the social media program for a high-profile youth hockey client and helped her design a personal brand that reflected her passions.

But the story didn’t end there.

Bailey submitted the work she’d done at Razor in a portfolio presentation to Conestoga College and earned early acceptance into their Graphic Design diploma program. And this past spring, as a graduate, she returned to intern at Razor, diving into client projects while picking up more of the hands-on design skills that have been foundational to her academic success.

Today, Bailey is enrolled in Conestoga’s Bachelor of Design program, and her career path is clear.
All she needed was a chance.

“All I needed was a chance.”

As an architecture-loving high school student, Claire Joseph @clairethemediaguru hoped for a chance to do her co-op placement at an architecture firm. Nothing was on offer.

“What about a graphic design studio?” her art teacher wondered. “Okay,” she said, although it didn’t seem ideal. But when creative director Roberto Carreiro welcomed Claire to the Razor Creative Solutions studio, he had a plan for her – and it wasn’t counting paperclips.

On her first day, Claire was sitting-in on client meetings, discovering the business side of design – something they didn’t teach in art class. And over the next four weeks she learned about colour theory, got hands-on experience with Photoshop and designed a personal brand image with mentoring and guidance from the Razor team.

Today, in her final year of high school and with university applications on the horizon, Claire is applying the skills she learned at Razor to elevate her art projects and build a design-savvy portfolio to present to architecture schools.
All she needed was a chance, and she got it at Razor.
